You have probably already tried on your own. Counting calories, cutting carbs, the app that tracked everything, the gym membership you used for six weeks. And the weight came back anyway.

That is not a willpower problem. It is a biology problem, and it is treatable.

Eddie Hughes, FNP-BC, treats weight the way any other medical condition gets treated. He reviews your labs, looks at what your body is actually doing, and builds a plan around your results. That may include GLP-1 medication, and it always includes a provider who knows your name and adjusts your plan as you go.

Tirzepatide

Brand-name Mounjaro and Zepbound, or compounded tirzepatide, depending on your coverage and your situation.

Semaglutide

Brand-name Wegovy and Ozempic, or compounded semaglutide, matched to your plan and budget.

Body composition scans

Our body composition scan tracks fat and muscle separately, so progress is measured by what is actually changing, not just a number on a scale.

Hormone and metabolic support

Ongoing monitoring

Lab rechecks, dose adjustments, and follow-up appointments so your plan changes as your body does.

Brand-name or compounded: you get both options here

Two paths, one honest conversation

This is where a lot of clinics are vague, so we will be direct.

If your insurance covers it

Eddie can prescribe brand-name GLP-1 medications: Mounjaro, Zepbound, Wegovy, or Ozempic.

If your insurance does not

Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide give you a more affordable path to the same active ingredient.

For a lot of people in the Tri-Cities, insurance does not cover weight loss medication. That does not mean you are out of options. Which path is right for you depends on your coverage, your budget, and your health history, and Eddie walks you through both at your consultation. You will know exactly what you are getting and what it costs before you start.

A note on the evidence: the large clinical trials people cite were run on the FDA-approved brand-name medications. Compounded versions contain the same active ingredient but have not been through those specific trials. Eddie explains the difference so you can decide with full information.

What medical weight loss costs in Johnson City

Most clinics make you call to find out. Here is ours.

$300 to $500

per month for most patients, depending on medication and dosing. That includes:

  • Your medical evaluation and lab work
  • Your medication
  • Follow-up appointments and dose adjustments
  • Nutrition and lifestyle guidance
  • Body composition monitoring

No contracts. No cancellation fees. No package to buy up front.

If you have insurance that covers a brand-name GLP-1, your cost may look different, and we will help you understand what applies.

Is this you?

Check off anything that sounds like the last couple of years.

  • You have lost the same 20 pounds more than once
  • You eat well and still watch the scale refuse to move
  • The weight settled around your middle and stayed there
  • You are tired in a way sleep does not fix
  • You have wondered whether the shots would actually work for you
  • Somebody told you to just eat less and move more

If three or more sound familiar, this is worth a conversation, not another restart.

Why a medical weight loss clinic works when dieting alone has not

Medical supervision. Eddie monitors your progress, manages side effects, and adjusts your plan based on how your body responds. That includes bloodwork, body composition analysis, and regular check-ins, not just a weekly weigh-in.

Prescription medication. GLP-1 medications are only available through a licensed provider. They work by acting on the hormones that regulate appetite, which is why people describe feeling satisfied with less food instead of feeling deprived.

A plan built for you. Your medical history, your current medications, your schedule, and your goals all shape the plan. Nothing here is a template.

Someone in your corner. When you hit a plateau, you have a provider to work through it with instead of quietly giving up.

Which weight loss path fits you?

Four quick questions. No email required.

Does your insurance cover weight loss medication?

Have you tried a GLP-1 medication before?

Besides the weight, what else is going on?

What matters most to you right now?

This is a starting point for conversation, not a diagnosis or a treatment recommendation. Eddie determines candidacy after an evaluation and lab work.

What to expect at your first appointment

  1. A real conversation

Eddie reviews your weight history, your current medications, your health conditions, and what you actually want out of this.

  2. Body composition analysis

A breakdown of fat mass, muscle mass, and water weight, so we have a real starting point.

  3. Lab work

We may check thyroid function, blood sugar, and other markers that affect weight.

  4. Your plan

Medication if it fits, along with nutrition and lifestyle guidance built around your life.

  5. What it costs

Clearly, before you commit to anything. Plan on about 45 to 60 minutes for the visit.

About the medications

GLP-1 medications act on hormones that regulate appetite and blood sugar. Most people notice they feel full sooner, cravings become manageable, and the constant background noise about food quiets down.

In clinical trials of the FDA-approved brand-name versions, semaglutide (Wegovy) produced average weight loss around 15 percent of body weight, and tirzepatide (Zepbound) around 20 percent. Real-world results vary and depend on consistency, nutrition, activity, and individual factors.

Side effects are usually mild and manageable, most often nausea, constipation, or fatigue during the adjustment period. Eddie starts you low, increases gradually, and stays available if something feels off. Our GLP-1 medications page covers side effects and the differences between Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound in more detail.

Protecting muscle while you lose fat

Losing muscle along with fat is a real concern with rapid weight loss, and it is one of the reasons we scan body composition instead of just weighing you.

Adequate protein and regular resistance training both help preserve lean mass. Eddie gives you specific targets based on your weight, your activity level, and your labs rather than a generic number. Peptide therapy may also support lean mass for some patients, and candidacy is determined at consultation.

What our patients are saying

Frequently asked questions

How much does medical weight loss cost in Johnson City?

Most patients invest $300 to $500 per month depending on medication and dosing, with no contracts or hidden fees. That covers your evaluation, medication, follow-ups, and monitoring. If insurance covers a brand-name GLP-1 for you, your cost may differ. We go over it clearly at your consultation.

Does insurance cover weight loss medication?

Sometimes. Coverage varies by plan and often depends on your BMI and related conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea. If you are covered, Eddie can prescribe a brand-name medication. If you are not, compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide is a more affordable path.

What is the difference between brand-name and compounded medication?

Both contain the same active ingredient. Brand-name versions like Zepbound and Wegovy are FDA-approved and are what the large clinical trials studied. Compounded versions are typically more affordable but have not gone through those specific trials. Eddie explains the trade-offs so you can choose.

Who prescribes the medication?

Eddie Hughes, FNP-BC, a board-certified family nurse practitioner, after a full evaluation of your history, current medications, and labs.

Do I need a weight loss doctor, or can a nurse practitioner prescribe?

Board-certified nurse practitioners like Eddie Hughes, FNP-BC, can evaluate you, order labs, and prescribe weight loss medication in Tennessee. What matters more than the title is whether the provider actually reviews your labs and adjusts your plan over time.

Do you offer weight loss shots or injections?

Yes. GLP-1 medications like semaglutide and tirzepatide are given by injection, usually once weekly, and most patients administer them at home after we show you how. Eddie determines which medication and dose fit you at your consultation.

How long will it take to lose 20 pounds?

It varies. With medication and supervision, many patients lose roughly one to two pounds per week, which would put 20 pounds somewhere in the 10 to 20 week range. We aim for sustainable results rather than a fast loss that comes back.

Can I get weight loss injections without a provider?

You should not. These medications require a prescription for real safety reasons. A 2024 study published in JAMA Network Open found that about 42 percent of online pharmacies selling semaglutide were operating illegally, and tested samples contained substantially more semaglutide than labeled, with signs of possible contamination. That is an overdose and contamination risk with nobody monitoring you.

Will I have to take medication forever?

Not necessarily. Many patients use medication for 6 to 18 months while actively losing weight and building new habits. Some continue at a lower maintenance dose, others transition off. Obesity is a chronic condition, so long-term treatment is reasonable for some people. It is your decision, made with your provider.

Do weight loss clinics actually work?

They work when there is real medical supervision, appropriate medication, and monitoring, and when the patient engages with the nutrition and activity side too. Medication makes the changes achievable. It does not replace them.

Is there a weight loss clinic near me in the Tri-Cities?

If you are in Johnson City, Kingsport, Bristol, Elizabethton, Jonesborough, or the surrounding area, our Bristol Highway office is a short drive. Many patients tell us the drive is worth having a provider who actually knows their history.

Do you see patients from Kingsport and Bristol?

Yes. Many of our weight loss patients drive in from Kingsport, Bristol, Elizabethton, Jonesborough, and across Northeast Tennessee.
