Weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar in Carter County

More than a third of adults in Elizabethton have obesity, and more than four in ten adults in Carter County have high blood pressure, according to CDC PLACES modeled estimates for 2023.

Adults withElizabethtonCarter County
Obesity36.3%37.9%
High blood pressure41.7%44.7%
Diagnosed diabetes14.4%15.9%
No leisure-time physical activity30.4%31.4%

Those numbers tend to travel together. Extra weight puts more load on your heart and makes blood sugar harder to control, and for many people, losing weight helps both.

They also matter for coverage. If your BMI is 27 or higher and you have high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes, you may meet the FDA-approved criteria for Wegovy or Zepbound. At a BMI of 30 or higher, you may qualify on BMI alone. Whether your insurance pays for it is a separate question, and we cover that below.

Sound familiar?

You have done the work. The scale has not noticed.

Maybe you walked the Tweetsie Trail every evening for a summer. Maybe you cut out bread, then sugar, then dinner.

You lost some, and then it came back, usually with a few extra pounds.

That pattern has a biological explanation. Eat less for long enough and your body answers with more hunger and a lower energy burn. Willpower loses that fight for most people.

Call your insurance before you drive over

Peak Performance is a self-pay clinic, so you know your price before you commit. Most patients pay $200 to $500 a month, depending on the medication and dose.

Semaglutide starts at $200. That monthly price includes your medication, your visits with Eddie, nutrition guidance, and body composition scans. Most patients also start with labs, because hormones, vitamin D, B vitamins, iron, and thyroid all affect how weight comes off. Labs are priced on their own. There is no contract and no package to buy up front.

Your insurance may still help with the medication itself. If your plan covers a brand-name option, Eddie can prescribe it. If it does not, he lays out the other options at your consultation.

In limited cases, when an FDA-approved medication cannot meet a patient's individual medical needs, a provider may decide a compounded version is appropriate under federal and state rules. Compounded drugs are not FDA approved, and FDA does not check them for safety, effectiveness, or quality before they are sold.

Five minutes on the phone with your plan

Ask these before your consultation and bring the answers with you:

  1. Is Wegovy or Zepbound on my formulary for weight management?
  2. Do I need prior authorization, and what does it require?
  3. Is there a BMI or diagnosis requirement?
  4. What would my copay be at the pharmacy?

Wegovy contains semaglutide. Zepbound contains tirzepatide. Both are FDA approved for chronic weight management in eligible adults.

Getting here

From Elizabethton to our Johnson City clinic

Most Elizabethton patients reach us in 20 to 30 minutes. Coming from Hampton or Roan Mountain, plan on more time.

You will not be making that drive every week. Here is how the visits work:

  • One longer first visit. Plan on 45 to 60 minutes for your consultation, labs, body composition scan, and plan.
  • Your weekly shot happens at home. We show you how at the clinic, and after that the injection is yours to handle.
  • Follow-ups on a schedule that fits you. How often you come back depends on how your body responds, and Eddie sets it with you.
  • Help without the drive. Something come up between visits? Call or send us a message and we will sort it out.
  • Thursday is our late day. We are open until 6 PM, which helps if you work in Elizabethton and cannot leave early.

Life after

What changes when the plan starts working

Patients usually notice the quiet first. Food stops running in the background of your whole day.

For a lot of people, the goal was never a number on the scale. It is jeans that fit again, stairs that feel easier, or a Saturday at Watauga Lake spent thinking about the water instead of how you look in it.

And it is weight that stays gone, because your plan was built on your numbers and you kept your muscle while the fat came off.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does a weight loss clinic cost near Elizabethton?

It depends on the clinic and the medication, so always ask what the monthly price includes. At Peak Performance, most patients pay $200 to $500 a month for medication, visits, and body composition scans, with no contract. Labs are priced on their own, based on what you need.

If your insurance covers a brand-name medication, that number can change.

Does the weight loss clinic take insurance?

Peak Performance is a self-pay clinic, so you pay us directly and know the price before you start.

Your insurance may still cover a brand-name GLP-1 like Wegovy or Zepbound, depending on your plan, your BMI, and conditions like high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. Call your plan before your consultation and bring what they tell you.

What kind of doctor prescribes weight loss shots?

In Tennessee, both physicians and board-certified nurse practitioners can prescribe them. Eddie Hughes is a board-certified family nurse practitioner who focuses on weight loss and hormone care.

Whoever you choose, ask how often they will review your labs and adjust your dose. That follow-through is what keeps the shots safe and working.

Where can I get a weight loss shot near Elizabethton?

Get it from a licensed provider who evaluates you first, not from an unmonitored online seller.

Peak Performance in Johnson City, 20 to 30 minutes from Elizabethton, prescribes semaglutide and tirzepatide after a consultation and lab work, then shows you how to give the weekly injection at home.

How often will I need to come to Johnson City?

Not every week. Your first visit takes about 45 to 60 minutes. After that, you come in for follow-ups where Eddie checks your progress and adjusts your dose, and you give the injection yourself at home.

Between visits, you can call or message us.

Can I keep seeing my regular doctor in Elizabethton?

Yes, and you should. Keep your primary care provider for everything else, and tell them you are starting a GLP-1.

As weight comes off, doses of blood pressure or diabetes medications sometimes need to change, so both providers should know everything you take.
